September Favorites

I feel like I haven’t done a favorites in so long, but now I’m back in the game. I can’t believe its October already. I also can’t believe I’m officially finished with my dietetic internship! I finished my Enrichment Rotation (which I split into 2, 2 week rotations) earlier this week! Now all that’s left is a whole lot of studying… But I absolutely loved my last two rotation and I’m very grateful my internship has an Enrichment, because I think I really found what I want to do with both (food blogging & eating disorder treatment, odd mix, I know). Anyways, here are a few things I’ve been loving over the last few months.

Physician’s Formula Organic Wear CC Cream
I tried this CC cream after hearing Allana Davison talk about the BB cream all of the time. For some reason I had a hard time finding the BB cream, so I settled for this one. According to online reviews the formulas are pretty much the same. This is my new go-to foundation. Its so easy, I honestly feel like it works best blending with my hands. Its got decent coverage and keeps my surprisingly matte for a non-matte foundation. Physician’s Formula is a little more expensive than most drugstore brands, but this foundation is really great quality.

Health at Every Size
When I was interning at the eating disorder treatment center, my preceptor let me borrow this book. She said that reading this book really opened her eyes and made her totally rethink nutrition. The book is all about intuitive eating, body acceptance, and scientific evidence that diets don’t work. It really is a totally different view on nutrition, which you definitely need to have when counseling eating disorder patients. I think any dietitian would love this book, because it could definitely be applied to general weight loss counseling as well.

I recently bought a Groupon for a three month subscription to UrthBox. UrthBox sends you  6 organic, non-GMO snacks each month. I’ve gotten some really good snacks. My favorite are the different snack bars from smaller companies I’ve never heard of before. I also got a really delicious, organic Twizzler type snack, it was sooo good! Anyways if you want to find a way to try some new, healthy snacks, I’d definitely suggest trying out UrthBox.

Most people who watch Narcos have probably already watched the new season, but if not, you need to get on that. The second season was sooo good, we watched it in about 4 days. And, bonus, I figured it would end after this season, but it seems like they set it up for a season 3!

Brain Dead
Ok I got hooked on this show after I watched a random episode with a friend. Before I tell you what its about I’ll say that it sounds really stupid, but hear me out. So the show focuses on characters on Capitol Hill, from both parties. It takes place in present day so campaigning is going on and all of that. But then a brain eating bug comes to DC and starts infecting people and making them more extreme and angry but no one believes the main character that this bug exists. Its kind of like a satire on politics and why people are so crazy these days. Its pretty funny but its also got some drama and twists in it. You can watch season 1 on Amazon Prime!

Anyways thats what I’ve been loving lately. I’m hoping to get some more recipe posts up soon now that I have a little more time on my hands. I’m sure I’ll want a break from studying to do some cooking and writing too!

June Favorites

Well I’m a little late to the game, but its favorites time again. I seriously can’t believe its July already. Summer is in full swing and I’m in the home stretch of my internship! Since I spend the majority of my time at my internship, most of my favorites this month include products/foods/activities that save time or make things a little less stressful.

Maybelline Dream Fresh BB Cream– I really do love the act of doing my makeup in the morning, but when I have to wake up in the 5:00 hour I want getting ready to take as little time as possible. This BB Cream is so quick because it applies easily with your fingers. I also really like it because it give a little bit of coverage, but looks pretty natural. Plus it has SPF 30, but isn’t too oily.

Fresh Lotus Youth Preserve Face Cream– This moisturizer is seriously the best. It feels really light on my skin and also smells like I just bit into a cucumber. I have fairly oily skin to begin with so I’m picky about mositurizers because I feel like a lot of them tend to leave an oily layer on my skin. This one sinks right in and feels light and refreshing.

Greek Gods Honey Vanilla Yogurt– I wore myself out on overnight oats and egg muffins for the first 10 weeks of my internship, so now I’ve moved on to yogurt and granola. I’ve been buying a large tub of this Greek Gods Honey Vanilla Greek Yogurt and dishing it out into little to-go containers throughout the week for breakfast. Then I just add some granola when I get to my internship in the morning. I don’t know why I love the flavor of this yogurt so much but it just seems to amplify the delicious flavor of any granola I put into it, so I’m a fan.

Graze Box– I recently wrote a blog post about Graze box, but it is definitely a current favorite of mine. I’ve been getting it every two weeks and the snacks are the perfect single serving to add to my lunch box. Plus I feel like it saves me a lot of time and money to have individual servings of snacks, rather than having to buy a bunch of different snacks. The variety keeps it interesting as well.

Blogilates– I’ve been doing Blogilates workouts for a few years now sporadically, but I’ve been doing them a lot more often recently. Incase you don’t know, Blogilates is a Youtube channel with a bunch of different pilates based workouts. Casey has a lottt of energy (sometimes a little too much, so be prepared) and her workouts always get me sweating. Lately she has been really into HIIT workouts, so her videos are only 8-10 minutes long, but she suggests you repeat them 3-4 times. These workouts always come in handy when I either can’t motivate myself to go to the gym, or am feeling really motivated to work out but also just want to spend time at home.  Her cardio based HIIT workouts tend to be my favorites.

Orange is the New Black– I may have binge-watched about 2 weeks later than everyone else, but I binge-watched just the same. I wasn’t sure what to expect after quite a lack-luster season last season but I have to say, this show came back with a bang. I really enjoyed this season. They brought up a lot of very real issues that really made me think. I would definitely suggest watching for anyone who may have fallen off the Orange is the New Black bandwagon last year.

Graze Box: Review

Product Reviews

I am all about healthy snacking, but I’m also all about variety. I get sick of eating the same thing over and over very quickly, but it can be expensive to keep a bunch of different snacks in the house. That’s why I was so excited to try Graze.

Graze is a subscription box that sends you 8 individually portioned snacks for $11.99 once a month, once every two weeks, or every week, depending on your subscription. The fun thing about Graze is that its totally different from Love with Food, or any other snack box. While those boxes send you different brands of snacks to try, Graze has over 100 snack recipes of their own. These snacks range from seasoned nuts, granola toppers for yogurt, flapjacks, trail mix, dried fruit, and even a few healthy cookies and brownies. When you sign up you can go through all of the snacks and decide which ones you want to try and which ones just don’t really look appealing. I kept in almost everything minus just a couple. In addition to the large variety of tasty snacks, most of them are fairly healthy as well. Almost every snack has a label with a health benefit on it, whether it be gluten free, whole grain, high fiber, or the amount of calories in the box.

I was so excited to try my snacks when the first box arrived. The picture above is 4 of the 8 snacks I got in my first box. The picture below shows the other 4. I love the variety of snacks. A few sweet and a few salty and savory. Personally I love the flapjacks, they’re like little granola bars but they taste very indulgent. The snickerdoodle dip was one that I was forced to share with my boyfriend. It was cinnamon pretzels with a cookie butter dip. Oh man, so good. The Laksa soup on the top right corner is one I tried on a whim. When you go in to set your snack preferences the soups are automatically turned off because they know they aren’t the most popular. I am a soup lover myself though, so I decided to give it a try. I actually really enjoyed it. You take the paste in the small left pocket and mix it up with water, add the noodles, and heat it up. It was definitely a nice, savory little snack. I loved the strawberries and cream granola as well. I used it as a yogurt topper for breakfast one morning and satisfied my sweet tooth without making me feel guilty. The Kettlecorn Kern Pops were also another favorite. They are like little sweet and salty half popped kernels. IMG_0443

Another thing I love about Graze is that you can purchase larger quantities of a snack you enjoyed. They sell sharing bags or individually packed multipacks of almost all of their snacks. I haven’t purchased any yet but there are a few that I’m very tempted by.

Out of all of the snack boxes I’ve tried this is by far my favorite. All of the snacks are fun and tasty, as well as being fairly healthy. I think the packaging of their products also makes it more fun than a lot of other boxes I’ve tried. This is one that I will definitely be renewing once my subscription runs out.

Bonus: sometimes you can find a Groupon for Graze as well!

On-the-go Breakfast

I always thought I was a morning person…until I had to be at work at 7am that is. I normally love waking up early and giving myself plenty of time to leisurely get ready for the day and make myself a nice breakfast. Well when you’re already waking up at 5:45am giving yourself extra time in the morning just isn’t going to happen. During this internship rotation I’ve learned that I need to have as little as possible to do in the morning in order to get to work on time and not be in a total frenzy. Because of this, I’ve learned a few delicious make-ahead recipes for breakfast. These can either be made the night before or at the beginning of the week and you can easily just grab them on your way out the door.

Blueberry Almond Overnight Oats
1/4 cups oats (I use Old Fashioned)
1/3 cup milk (I used skim)
1/4 cup greek yogurt (I used Greek Gods Honey Vanilla)
2 tsp maple syrup
1/4 cup blueberries
10 or so almonds, chopped

Mix everything together in a sealable container and refrigerate overnight. I normally put mine in a mason jar or an old peanut butter jar. I think the honey vanilla yogurt really adds to the taste of these oats and it just never gets old!

Egg Muffins (Makes 10)
4 eggs
8 egg whites
1 small tomato, chopped
2 scallions, chopped (or any type of onion you want)
1 small jalapeño, chopped
6 oz pork sausage without casing

Preheat oven to 350F. Cook sausage in a frying pan and prepare vegetables. Add everything in a bowl and whisk together until combined. Prep a muffin tin with non-stick spray and divide the egg mixture evenly over 10 muffins. Cook for 20-25 minutes, or until cooked through. These muffins are really easy and keep well in the fridge. I tend to bring 2 with me each morning and just heat them up for a few seconds at work!

These two meals are so quick and simple. They save so much time during already busy mornings before work.

What do you eat when you have an early morning?

January Favorites

Well January certainly flew by didn’t it?! I can’t believe the first month of the year is over. I have lots of new favorites to share this month.

Favorite Cookbook: 150 Best Spiralizer Recipes
My grandma actually got me this cookbook for Christmas and we’ve been trying at least one new recipe from it every week. So far we’ve had Butternut Squash Carbonara, Lemon Garlic Shrimp with Zoodles, and Spiralized Potatoes with green beans, bacon, and parmesan. (I’ve also posted them all on my Instagram) Every recipe has been awesome. My boyfriend even went so far as the say the Butternut Squash Carbonara was his favorite thing I’ve ever made. I have basically every other page bookmarked so I’m sure I’ll have lots of other food pics to share. But if you have a spiralizer I would highly suggest this book. There are so many recipes and things to spiralize that I would never even think of.

Favorite Youtuber: Raya Was Here
I’ve been really into travel vloggers on Youtube lately and Raya is definitely my favorite. I found her through her boyfriend Fun for Louis, who also has a really awesome channel and posts videos daily. I love Raya because she is so relatable. She didn’t know what to do after college and was feeling the pressure to get a 9-5 job that she hated and do what everyone else expected of her, so instead she decided to travel. Now she travels non-stop, she doesn’t even technically have a home. She is also incredibly appreciative of everywhere she goes and everything she sees, and that definitely comes through in her videos.

Honorable mention goes to Meghan Rienks’ anxiety video. Honestly I don’t normally like her videos, but this one popped up and its really awesome. She talks about what it feels like to have anxiety and its pretty spot on.

Favorite Clothing Item: Banana Republic Leather Jacket
I finally have a leather jacket! I’ve wanted one for a long time but never really bit the bullet. I had a fake one form Forever 21 for a while, but as you can imagine it didn’t last very long. So this year for Christmas I asked for a nice leather jacket, and I love it! Unfortunately right now its a little cold to wear it, but I wear it any chance I get and it just makes me feel so cool!

Favorite Random Thing: Lavender Oil
I keep meaning to talk about this and I keep forgetting. A few months ago I got some Lavender Essential Oil because I read that it was relaxing. On the bottle it said that you could put a couple drops on your pillow to help you sleep and thats what I’ve been doing. It really is so relaxing! I feel like I didn’t appreciate the difference it makes until I slept somewhere else one night and didn’t have it with me. If you have trouble falling asleep or turning your brain off at night, this is definitely worth a shot.

Favorite Product: Origins Original Skin Retexturizing Mask with Rose Clay
This is another product I got for Christmas that I’ve been using non-stop throughout January. This mask kind of does it all. It makes me feel super fancy and luxurious because it feels and acts like a clay mask, but when it dries on your skin you scrub it off and it becomes an exfoliating mask. My skin always feel so nice and soft after using it. I also got the Clear Improvement Active Charcoal Mask form Origins, and I really like that one too.

November Favorites

Well I think November was like 2 seconds long. I can’t believe its December already! I can’t really complain though, December is one of my favorite months. So without further adieu, lets say goodbye to November with some monthly favorites and hello to lovely, Christmasy December!

Favorite Meal: Crock-pot White Chicken Chili– Its been very rainy and sometimes cold this month, which calls for chili. I’ve made this white chicken chili in the Crock-pot a couple times this month and its sooo good! I basically go wild with the spices and use greek yogurt instead of sour cream, but other than that I follow the recipe, and I highly suggest it.

Favorite Product: Maybelline Falsies mascara– This is really nothing new. I’ve been using this mascara for a few years now, but I just never realized how great it was until I ran out and decided to try something different. Its just so good and so cheap!

Favorite Exercise: Yoga with Adriene– I’ve also been a fan of Yoga with Adriene for a while now, but I’ve been making more of an effort to do it this month. Adriene has a youtube channel where she has tons of yoga videos. She has a really great 30 day challenge which is an awesome way to get into yoga. Adriene is really down to earth and doesn’t take it too seriously, which makes yoga a lot more fun.

Favorite Clothing Item: Old Navy Sweatpants– I got these sweatpants at the beginning of the month from Old Navy and have worn them basically every single night. They are sooo comfortable and I feel like they make me look like a little less of a bum than usual.

Random Favorite: The Skimm– A few different people actually told me about the Skimm earlier in the month and I’m so glad I signed up! This is a daily email newsletter that gives you just a skim of the biggest news stories that are going on in the world. Its written in a very sarcastic and easy to understand way. This is perfect for me because I want to know what’s going on going on in the world but I hate hate hate watching the news.

Monthly Favorites | October 2015

NC State Fair

NC State Fair | Made to Order

I know this is a little different, but I think I’m going to start doing monthly favorites from now on. Being the lifestyle blog/youtube obsessed person that I am, I just love watching and reading people’s favorites, so I thought I’d do my own. I don’t want my favorites to focus on one specific food or product, or anything like that, I just want to talk about everything I’ve been enjoying this month.

Snack: Apples and almond butter
Since this is a food blog, I’ll start with food. My favorite snack this month is apples with almond butter. I go through phases with this snack, and right now I am very much into it. I get the big giant apples from Harris Teeter and drizzle some Trader Joes almond butter on them and it is so delicious and filling. The other day I was so full I couldn’t even finish it, so if you’re looking for a good afternoon snack.. this is it.

Meal: zoodles with turkey meatballs
My lovely grandmother got me a spiralizer a month or so ago and I’ve been using it non-stop every since. My favorite thing to make is zoodles (zucchini noodles) with marinara sauce and turkey meatballs. I must admit that I cheat majorly and use trader joes frozen turkey meatballs and their basil marinara sauce. But this meal is one of the easiest things you can fix at night and it is even more delicious than I thought it would be.

Scent: Vanilla Pumpkin Marshmallow
Since we’re now into the heart of Fall, I’m now into the heart of my candle phase. I love a good, sweet, fall candle, so I went to Bath & Body Works to pick up a few new ones. They have so many amazing scents, but my favorite right now is the Vanilla Pumpkin Marshmallow. It’s definitely a sweet scent, but those are the kind of scents I love. Also, since its Bath & Body Works it seriously fills up the whole house with deliciousness.

Product: The Body Shop Vitamin C Glow Boosting Moisturizer
My favorite product for the last couple months has been The Body Shop Vitamin E Moisturizer. I never really used to moisturize my skin much because everything I used seemed to leave my face feeling gross and greasy. This moisturizer is more of a gel than a cream and it feels sooo good on the skin. It also sinks in a dries up as soon as you put it on, so it doesn’t leave your face feeling greasy at all.

Website: Estée Lalonde
Formally Essie Button, aka my favorite Youtuber. A friend introduced me to her channel about a year or so ago and I’ve been obsessed ever since. Estée just went through a bit of a re-branding and I personally think its working out really well for her. I love the new style of her website and videos and all of her pictures make me want to just go travel the world, go shopping, or redo the entire interior of my house.

TV Show: House of Cards
I finally gave in to the hype. My boyfriend and I tried watching this a while ago and just couldn’t get into it, but we finally decided to try it again. It was better than we expected, but still it was just kind of meh. Now we just started the second season and, holy crap its good. I’m now in the phase where I just want to go home and watch it all of the time.

Activity: The State Fair
For everyone in Raleigh, October is State Fair month. People come from all over the state to come to the fair and we are lucky enough to have it right in our backyard! While the fair is crowded and expensive, it also makes for the best people watching every and some amazing fried food. The fair is the one time each year I get fried oreos, aka the most amazing food ever. This year I also got a caramel apple that was dipped in caramel, rolled in marshmallows, dipped in chocolate, and then rolled in graham crackers. Yeah. I know I’m a nutrition student but you just have to indulge sometimes.

So these are just some of the things I’ve been enjoying this month. What have you all been getting into? Anything I should try?
